Avalanche Studies from 1956-1961

In 1957, Peter Schaerer, a Swiss engineer, along with Parks Canada Warden Noel Gardner, began documenting weather and snow observations to design avalanche control works at Rogers Pass. These observations would lead to the design and location of avalanche control works and static defenses against avalanches. Read some of his technical papers here.

PETER ScHAERER Photo Collection

Through Peter Schaerer’s research, he captured and collected a series of photographs documenting research methods and avalanche events during the development of an avalanche control program in Rogers Pass. Many of the photographs were taken by Bruno Engler.
