Revelstoke Museum & Archives offers an immersive experience into the history of the region. Learn about our Indigenous roots through our language lessons in our Sinixt exhibit, explore experimental avalanche science tools, historic plants, or the stories beneath Revelstoke’s coloured past. The Revelstoke Museum & Archives has something for everyone.

Heritage Garden

Relax and unwind in our beautiful garden getaway. This space is open to the public during museum hours and entry is free of charge.

Heritage Garden was opened in 2004 when the former Post Office delivery lane was turned into this peaceful downtown greenspace. It was designed by landscape architect Barbara Johnstone Davidson. The garden is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. Watch throughout the season for sales of plants, as the gardeners raise money to purchase new plants.

The Heritage Garden was presented with an Award of Honour from the B.C. Heritage Society in 2005.

The Gift Shop

We proudly offer locally made items, as well as products by artisans throughout the province. We carry Murchies Teas and Rogers Chocolates, two pioneer B.C. brands. Find vintage t-shirts, patches, key-chains, and stickers reproduced from actual ski club badges. Browse our selection of books about the region, including our own publication First Tracks - the History of Skiing in Revelstoke, and two books by our very own curator, Cathy English. We have a wide variety of photographs and posters from our archives - framed or unframed. There is no charge for coming in and browsing our Gift Shop – drop in and see what we’ve got; stock is always changing!

Parlour Room

Take a rest during your visit in our beautifully furnished parlour room. Try out our trivia quizzes, fold a paper crane, or look at the 3-D stereoscopic viewer. Trained pianists are welcome to play the 1898 piano from the former Selkirk Hall lodge building.

Archives/Reference Room

The archives and reference room contain thousands of records allowing in depth research of our community as far back as the late 1800s. In the Reference Room you will find clipping files, reference books, phone books, school annuals, and other materials. The archives contain CPR files, community records, property tax rolls, maps, and community newspapers from 1890 to 2007. Ask a staff member for assistance with your archival and reference questions. 

Activities

You will find a variety of activities to do throughout the museum. Try a scavenger hunt - yes adults can do them, too! Try our “Then and Now” matching game - there are a couple of very tricky ones which might stump you. Try your hand at folding an origami crane to remember the people lost in the 1910 Rogers Pass avalanche. Learn a few words in the Sinixt language in the Sinixt First Nation exhibit. Check out the interactive avalanche map in the Land of Thundering Snow exhibit. Once you get upstairs, leave your name on our “Where in the World Are You From” map, and dive into the interactive map in the Stories Beneath the Surface exhibit.

Children's Play Area

Exploring a museum with young children can be a challenge. The upstairs play area is a fun space for children and families to relax and play. Put on a puppet show, put together a floor puzzle, or build a castle with the wooden blocks. Craft materials are always available. Scavenger hunts are available at the visitor’s desk and can be a fun and engaging way for children to explore the museum. Admission for children under 13 is free.

ACCESSIBILITY

The museum is accessible for visitors in wheelchairs and with accessibility challenges through the lift at the rear of the Heritage Garden. Press the buzzer for assistance, and a staff member will come to assist you. There is currently no wheelchair access to the second floor. Access to material in the archives and content on the second floor can be provided upon request to those unable to use the stairs.
