130 years ago: Kootenay Mail, May 2, 1896
It was hoped that Revelstoke firemen would gather at a special meeting of the brigade in the fire hall. The meeting was called in order to elect officers for the following year and would commence at 8 o’clock sharp.
120 years ago: Revelstoke Mail-Herald, May 5, 1906
The Revelstoke Land Company was selling a few five-acre villa lots suitable for fruit culture and garden marketing. The land could be purchased on small monthly, quarterly or semi-annual payments. The fertile land was situated within a five-minute walking distance of the new schoolhouse site, which had been recently purchased by the city.
110 years ago: Revelstoke Mail-Herald, May 6, 1916
An advertisement in this week’s paper featured a grocery special on Adam’s Tutti Frutti gum. The former method of hand wrapping the confection had been replaced by a special machine wrapping which enclosed each separate stick in wax paper and tinfoil. The outer package wrapper of the candy, which came in five flavours, was a valuable coupon worth saving for Regimental or College Shield.
100 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 5, 1926
A service in honour of Mother’s Day was going to be held at the Revelstoke United Church. Special features and music had been arranged for the day. In the evening, music was going to be provided by a choir composed of local Revelstoke mothers and daughters.
90 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 1, 1936
A small group of local hockey fans headed out of town to catch the big game in Vancouver. Hugh Mulholland, H. Pulley, P. Dean and Bert Daniels made the trip to watch the exciting match between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Blackhawks.
80 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 2, 1946
A local teacher and ten of her students were heading to Penticton to take part in the Okanagan Valley Musical Festival. The pupils of Mrs. Allwood would be participating in vocal and piano solos, duets, trios and verse speaking. There were 23 entries altogether, and the town wished them all good luck!
70 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 3, 1956
The Revelstoke Mosquito Patrol was called into action! Two men covered the district, taking care of possible breeding places, as well as taking preventative measures to keep the bugs at bay. The city also ordered a new fogger to replace an old machine that had broken down the previous year.
60 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 4, 1966
The Revelstoke Girls’ Outdoor Club took a field trip to Sutherland Falls. The girls went on bicycle, on horseback, and by car to the waterfalls where they found a sizzling campfire waiting for them. Despite the snow, the girls hiked around the falls and got home just in time for dinner.
50 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 5, 1976
It was hoped that the Rod and Gun Club’s Sportsman Dance would have a great attendance. There would be live music from 9pm-1am and proceeds from the event would finance the club’s Columbia River Days weekend later in the summer. The largest canoe race in Revelstoke’s history was going to be held that weekend, and it was hoped that it would be heartily funded by the dance.
40 years ago: Revelstoke Review, May 7, 1986
It was announced that the Expo 86 committee would assist the Revelstoke Festival Society with July 1st celebrations and host the annual parade. The entrants were encouraged to use the “Man in Motion” theme and salute the many countries at Expo, the province of BC, or Canada Day.
30 years ago: Revelstoke Times Review, May 1, 1996
Hundreds of Revelstoke secondary school students took part in a Milk Run. This was a three-kilometre walk, run, or bike to raise money for the BC Epilepsy Society and the BC Sports and Fitness Council. RSS students raised more than $300.
20 years ago: Revelstoke Times Review, May 3, 2006
It was officially announced that the ski resort’s new name was going to be Revelstoke Mountain Resort. A surveyor presented progress made on the hill’s development, with aerial maps showing where trails had been blazed and where gondolas would soon soar. Summer plans would be focused on developing the sites where the gondolas were going to go.
