Programs and Publications:

School & Youth Museum Tours:

We welcome school and youth tours. Please call the Manager/Curator to make arrangements. A variety of grade-level worksheets are available. Specific programs have been developed for Secondary School classes, particularly on the subject areas of immigration, First Nations and World War I. Other curriculum based tours can be designed in consultation with teachers. Scouting and Girl Guide groups are also welcome and we have programs designed to complete badge requirements. All other youth groups are welcome. Youth and school tours are by donation.

Group Museum Tours:

Group tours of adults and/or youth are very welcome. To have a tour planned specifically for your group, call the Manager/Curator to make arrangements. Groups are welcome to use our large public space for a meeting, then have a tour of the museum and/or a talk on some aspect of local history - maybe even the history of your group or organization! Group tours are available for $2 per person, or more if refreshments are provided.

Birthday Parties:

Looking for a unique venue for your child's party? The Museum offers party activities for $5 per child. We have a variety of activities and crafts to provide some unique entertainment for your children and their guests.
We can accommodate parties of up to 12 children from ages 5 to 12. Activities can be geared for different ages. Most programs last from 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours. After the chosen activity, the guests can move to the location of your choice for any party food or other activities.
Please book at least 3 weeks in advance. Dates are subject to availability of staff.
Some of the activities include: Gold Rush Treasure Hunt; Mystery of the Carnes Creek Nugget (a giant board game); a ghostly downtown heritage tour; crafts and other activities. We can customize the party around the interests of your children and their friends.

Heritage Cemetery Tours:

Heritage Tours of Revelstoke's Mountain View Cemetery are offered throughout the spring and summer. The cemetery was in use as early as 1890 and features many beautiful headstones and fascinating stories. The tour takes about one hour to one-and-a-half hours and focuses on the history of the cemetery grounds, stories of Revelstoke's pioneers, a fascinating piece of B.C. history involving Sir James Hector and two unsolved murders. Cemetery walks are scheduled during the summer or can be requested by a group of four or more people. Cost is $5.00 per person. Meet at the cemetery gates or call the museum for a ride.

Downtown Heritage Walks:

Guided downtown walking tours can be arranged by request. Three specific routes are available or a custom route can be arranged. Tours focus on the built history of the community and take between one to two hours. One to two interior visits can be arranged with sufficient notice. Cost is $5.00 per person and includes a copy of the Heritage Tour Brochure. Driving tours can also be arranged. The guide will come on your tour bus to provide a one to one-and-one-half hour tour of the city and outlying areas.

Brown Bag History:

Join us every other Wednesday for a talk on local history from 12:15 to 12:45. Bring your bag lunch. Coffee and cookies are provided. $5 per person. Upcoming dates for Spring 2008 are: June 4 (Nursing); June 18 (Government Agents.) The series will continue during the summer as “BROWN BAG PICNIC” and will be held in the Heritage Garden when weather permits. Subjects to be announced. Summer dates are: July 2, July 16, July 30, August 13, August 27. 2008

Hogmanay:

On December 30th of each year, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., the Museum celebrates "Hogmanay" (Scottish New Year) with an open house reception. Seasonal food and a performance by the Revelstoke Scottish Country Dancers make this a pleasant afternoon. This is our opportunity to thank all of our supporters and to celebrate our successes of the past year. There is no charge for this event.

"GARDEN SEMINAR WITH DON BURNET"

Come join us at the Museum on Saturday, May 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm to hear “The Garden Expert,” Don Burnett from Bylands Nursery in Kelowna. Don is a certified arborist, a landscape designer, a grower as well as a superb broadcaster, lecturer, author and researcher. The topic will be “Basic Landscape Design and Water Wise Gardening.” $16 per person. Please call the museum to reserve your spot. Refreshments will be served.

"HERITAGE EXPLORERS"

A unique way for children ages 5 – 12 to experience Revelstoke’s history. The program runs every THURSDAY in July and August. Included in the sessions will be favorites such as “Explore the Museum,” “Fun and Games in the Garden,” and “Butter and Biscuits.” Call the museum for more information and to register.

"CHINESE LEGACIES EXHIBIT"

In collaboration with Revelstoke Railway Museum, we present Chinese Legacies. The Revelstoke Museum & Archives component of the exhibit will feature Revelstoke’s Chinese Community and will open on Saturday, August 16th at 11:00 am. The Revelstoke Railway Museum exhibit on the history of the Chinese labourers who built the CPR will open on Friday, August 15th after the official opening of Railway Days. Join us for both of these exciting exhibit openings.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

BEER TASTING will be held this year on Friday, August 22 beginning at 5:00 pm. Former Revelstoke resident, Chef Ron Kwong of “Pings Wings Wandering Wok Catering,” will be serving up his famous wings to complement the fine beers of Mount Begbie Brewing Co.

"A TRADITION OF ELEGANCE"

Join us on Saturday, October 25th, 2008 for our annual fundraising Progressive Dinner. Enjoy three courses with matching wines at three locations. This gala event includes historic tidbits, door prizes and musical entertainment.

"HERITAGE GARDEN"

The Heritage Garden is a pleasant place for a coffee break or a picnic lunch. Access to the garden is free during Museum hours.
 

"Revelstoke - History & Heritage" by Ruby Nobbs

This comprehensive history of Revelstoke was published in 1998 by Ruby Nobbs, who was born in Revelstoke in 1907. Ruby spent much of her life learning the history of this community and sharing it with others, through her volunteer work as manager of Revelstoke Museum and Archives. This hardcover book is 300 pages long and features over 300 photographs. Cost is $30.00 plus $6.00 shipping.

"Rail Tales" by Ruby Nobbs

This book of railway stories from the Revelstoke division of the Canadian Pacific Railway was published in the fall of 2000, just months before Ruby's death in April of 2001. It sells for $14.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

"Revelstoke Heritage Tour"

This brochure features three separate tours featuring Revelstoke's heritages homes and business and public buildings. Maps and colour and black-and-white photographs make it easy to find the featured buildings and learn about our built history. $2.00.

"Kaleidoscope" by George A. Wells

George Wells grew up in Revelstoke, the son of pioneer clothing merchant Frank B. Wells. His colourful memoirs describe his adventures growing up in Revelstoke as well as his later adventures as a salmon fisher, skier, railroader, prospector and Royal Canadian Air Force pilot. $18.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

"The Geography of Memory - Recovering Stories of a Landscape's First People" by Eileen Delehanty Pearkes

In a quest for understanding, Eileen D. Pearkes set out to find the story behind the Sinixt First Nation, also known as the "Arrow Lakes Indians." With the help of members of the Sinixt Nation, declared "extinct" in 1956, Pearkes traveled, researched and interviewed her way through a course of discovery that informs this personal account with a reverence for the land and its first peoples. $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
