What is the Heritage Garden?
Revelstoke Museum and Archives has constructed a heritage garden in the
100' x 25' lot adjacent to the museum building, the area that once served
as Post Office access.
Our main project goals are:
To
provide interpretation of land-use and agricultural history of this district
through interpretive signage and through plant exhibits.
To
interpret ethnic community history through traditional garden beds (i.e.
Italian vegetable garden; Chinese medicinal herb garden; aboriginal plants.)
To
invite community participation through donations of funding and plants and
volunteer work.
To
create an ecologically appropriate and inviting greenspace in the downtown
core.
To
incorporate outdoor public art into the garden space.
To
provide a space for children to learn about gardening and about local plant
species.
To
educate garden visitors about heritage species.

Progress to Date:
As of July of 2004, most of the construction elements have been completed,
including brick columns and wrought iron fencing. On the First Street
side, bricks from the 1900 CPR Station were used, and in the back, bricks
from the old Queen Victoria Hospital were used, adding another heritage
aspect to the project.
Beds and pathways were completed and the wood arbour was constructed in
the spring and summer of 2004. Planting took place in early June. Interpretive
signage will be added in the future. The Grand Opening will take place
on Saturday, July 24, during the Revelstoke Homecoming, just prior to
the Parade.
How you can be involved:
Volunteer:
We will need volunteers to help plant and maintain the garden. If you
are interested, please contact the museum. We would like to create a volunteer
schedule for this year. Let us know what you can do to help.
Donate Funds:
We have received $34,000 in donations for the project to date and are
still seeking funding. There are two ways to contribute:
Buy-A-Brick
Program. For a donation of $10 to $99, have your name recorded in a permanent
"Memory Book." Donations can be made in memoriam, or on behalf
of others.
Individual
or Corporate Donations. For a donation of $100 or more, a plaque will
be placed on a donor board in the garden. Memorial donations can also
be made.
A receipt for tax purposes will be issued for all donations over $10
